Top seed Iga Swiatek began her Indian Wells title defence with a dominant 6-0 6-1 win over Claire Liu. Swiatek won the first 11 games of the match and finished the one-sided contest in just over an hour. Ad Swiatek was ruthlessly efficient in just her second meeting against Liu.
Iga Swiatek has congratulated Mikaela Shiffrin after she won her 87th World Cup race to become the most decorated skier of all time at just 27 years old. The world No. 1 and Shiffrin have struck up a virtual friendship in the last three years with both athletes praising each other through interviews and messages on social media.
BERLIN: Borussia Dortmund led twice but were held 2-2 by bitter local rivals Schalke to lose ground on Bayern Munich who earlier won 5-3 against Augsburg and ended Saturday two points clear atop the Bundesliga.
MILAN: The comparisons with Diego Maradona keep coming for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. And, just like the Argentina great, Kvaratskhelia appears to be leading Napoli to the Serie A title.
LONDON: Chelsea might finally be finding their stride under Graham Potter while Liverpool’s up-and-down season took another nosedive in the English Premier League on Saturday.
INDIAN WELLS: World number one Iga Swiatek launched her bid for a rare Indian Wells repeat with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over 56th-ranked American Claire Liu on Saturday. Neither Liu nor the breezy conditions on Stadium Court troubled Swiatek, who is seeking to become just the second woman — after Martina Navratilova in 1990-91 — to sucessfully defend her title at the prestigious combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournament. Swiatek roared through the first set, winning 25 of 32 points.
American Taylor Fritz will take on either compatriot Ben Shelton or Italian Fabio Fognini as he begins his title defence at Indian Wells this week, with top-ranked Iga Swiatek facing a potential third-round showdown with 2019 champ Bianca Andreescu.
