Olympic snowboarder Redmond Gerard's return to the Winter Olympics in Beijing puts him in elite company. At 21, he is one of four snowboarders to return to the Winter Games after winning gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games. Chloe Kim (halfpipe), Shaun White (halfpipe) and Jamie Anderson (slopestyle) are the others (Gerard won gold in men's slopestyle).
THE WINTER OLYMPICS begins this week in Beijing, and that is a harder sentence to process than it might seem. For some, the first few words — the Winter Olympics begins — matter most. For others, the last few — in Beijing — hang heaviest.
La XXIV edición contará con más de 2.900 deportistas de 90 países (14 españoles) en un evento marcado otra vez por la COVID-19 y blindado contra contagios.
The Winter Olympics are almost upon us! The world’s biggest winter sports stars are descending on Beijing to compete for their share of 109 medals – seven more than were up for grabs in PyeonChang four years ago. The Games will officially begin on February 4 and run until February 20, with Mikaela Shiffrin, Shaun White, Chloe Kim, Yuzuru Hanyu and Ester Ledecka among the box-office names to look out for.
It is easy to get over excited when an athlete bursts onto the scene, particularly when they look like they are once-in-a-generation talents. But we often forget the mental toll that can have on people who have no experience of fame or an abnormal life — and Chloe Kim has been open about how global recognition has affected her. The American snowboarder is a huge star and she will go to Beijing 2022 as the overwhelming favourite to win halfpipe gold, retaining the title which catapulted her worldwide fame when she topped the podium at Pyeongchang 2018.
Shaun White was one of four defending gold medalists named to the US snowboarding team Friday, along with Chloe Kim, Jamie Anderson and Red Gerard.
