Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty Lose In Semifinals As India Open Campaign Ends

Indian doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty's campaign at the India Open Super 750 ended in the semifinals after they suffered a straight-game loss to Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in New Delhi on Saturday. Satwik and Chirag, the 2022 champions, were outplayed 18-21, 14-21 in just 37 minutes by the world number 3 Malaysian duo, who produced a class act to derail the Indian pair's game plan. "I think we should have closed down in the first game but credit to them they were really good in the service situations, which we didn't really expect because probably we didn't prepare for it. Having said that, we should have been little more calmer," Chirag said after the loss.

"It's like you see nothing at first, and then suddenly you see the fruit growing." Tan Kim Her's voice was tinged with emotion as he reflected on the journey of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the two men he paired and who fondly call him "Daddy". The affection is mutual and quite understandable. After all, Satwik and Chirag got their the first lessons together during Tan's first tenure as India's doubles badminton coach between 2015 to 2019. He is back in the saddle after incumbent Mathias Boe decided to quit coaching altogether following a disappointing Paris Olympics.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu progressed to the quarterfinals, while Kiran George delivered a gritty performance under pressure to keep the home flag flying in men's singles at the India Open badminton tournament in New Delhi on Thursday. Title contenders Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who had won the 2022 edition, recovered from an opening game reversal to beat Japan's Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura 20-22 21-14 21-16 to inch closer to the crown. "I think they were quite good in their flat exchanges. As I said, we can speed up controlling easy errors which we shouldn't have. I think we were cruising quite comfortably in the first game, but happy that we could. However tired the game was, we still managed to beat," Chirag said.

India Open: Spotlight On Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty As Jumbo Indian Contingent Aims To End Two-Year Title Drought

The contingent is the biggest ever but focus would be on a handful of tried-and-tested names, especially the men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, when Indian shuttlers go up against a world-class field in the India Open Super 750 tournament beginning in New Delhi on Tuesday. Despite the name, Indian success at the tournament hasn't been particularly regular with none from the host nation winning any title in the past two editions. The 46-strong group that will take the court this week would be desperate to make some amends after an ordinary Olympic campaign six months ago.
