Leclerc started the season like a house on fire but has quickly seen his lead evaporate as reigning Red Bull champion Max Verstappen came to the fore, and the Dutchman now enjoys a 49-point lead over his Ferrari rival.
Christian Horner has defended Red Bull’s decision not to issue a statement condemning Nelson Piquet’s racial abuse of Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes have dominated the British Grand Prix in recent years, winning eight of the last ten but it is going to take something extraordinary for either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell to hit top spot in 2022.
Carlos Sainz upstaged local hero Lewis Hamilton to top the times for Ferrari in Friday's second practice at the British Grand Prix, outpacing his Mercedes rival by just over a tenth of a second on a wet and windy day. The Spaniard, recording his first session-topping time since the Australian Grand Prix in April, clocked a best lap of one minute and 28.952 seconds to beat the seven-time champion, who appeared to have rediscovered his verve, by 0.163 seconds. Valtteri Bottas topped the times for Alfa Romeo ahead of home hero Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes in Friday's rain-swept opening practice session at the British Grand Prix. The Finn, who was Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate before moving teams this year, clocked a best lap time of one minute and 42.249 seconds in a relatively dull session with limited serious running for fast lap times. Seven-time world champion Hamilton, the subject of offensive racist and homophobic comments by Nelson Piquet reported this week, was half a second adrift of Bottas, but ahead of Carlos Sainz, his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher of Haas.
SILVERSTONE, England: Valtteri Bottas was fastest in a damp and largely meaningless first practice for the British Grand Prix on Friday (Jul 1) with half the field including Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen failing to set a time.
