Daniil Medvedev will overtake Novak Djokovic as world No 2 after completing his clay-court transformation with victory over Holger Rune to win the Italian Open.
Daniil Medvedev moved into only the second clay court final of his career on Saturday as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 7-5 at the Italian Open. The former world number one will play for the title on Sunday at the Foro Italico against Holger Rune, who came from a set and a break down to put out Casper Ruud 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-2. Medvedev and Tsitsipas suffered through several rain interruptions totalling four and a half hours as the atrocious weather of this week continues.
ROME: Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina won the Italian Open when Ukrainian opponent Anhelina Kalinina retired due to a left thigh injury early in the second set of the rain-delayed final on Saturday.
‘Il cielo è sereno,’ is not a phrase you will have heard frequently in Rome over the past fortnight. The sky has certainly not been clear, and the daily assault of grey cloud and sporadic onslaught of rain has caused many a stop-start match to hamper the schedule for players and spectators alike.
ROME : Holger Rune battled from a set and break down to seal a 6-7(2) 6-4 6-2 win over world number four Casper Ruud in an absorbing all-Scandinavian Italian Open semi-final on Saturday and meets Stefanos Tsitsipas or Daniil Medvedev next.
Holger Rune defeated Casper Ruud with a comeback 6-7(2) 6-4 6-2 win in the Italian Open semi-finals. Rune made his way to this stage with a hard-fought win over Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Ad Ruud had an easier time of it with a two-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo.
Casper Ruud wants to go one step further at the French Open this year than he did last term, when he was beaten by his idol Rafael Nadal in the final. Preparation has been far from ideal for Ruud in the run-up to the second Grand Slam of the year, with the world No. 4 enduring a tricky start to the campaign.
ROME — Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina beat Russia's Veronika Kudermetova 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 at the Italian Open on Friday to reach the biggest final of her career and dedicated the victory to her war-torn country.
