ROME, May 16 : World number one Jannik Sinner had a restless night before completing a rain-interrupted victory over Daniil Medvedev to reach the Italian Open final on home soil on Saturday.
Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 when their rain-delayed semifinal resumed on Saturday and set up an Italian Open final against Casper Ruud.
ROME: Casper Ruud maintained his focus during a nearly two-hour rain delay to rout home player Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 and reach the Italian Open final for the first time on Friday. The match was suspended with Ruud leading 4-1 in the first set. In Sunday’s final on the red clay of the Foro Italico, Ruud will face top-ranked Jannik Sinner or former No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. Sinner led Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 when their semifinal was suspended due to rain. The match will resume on Saturday. Coco Gauff will play Elina Svitolina in the women’s final on Saturday.
May 15 : World number one Jannik Sinner moved to within two games of the Italian Open final before heavy rain suspended his semi-final against Daniil Medvedev on Friday, with the home favourite leading 6-2 5-7 4-2.
May 13 : Home favourite Luciano Darderi battled past Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar 7-6(5) 5-7 6-0 in a three-hour epic that stretched into the early hours of Thursday to reach the Italian Open semi-finals and extend the best Masters 1000 run of his career.
May 13 : Italian Lorenzo Musetti has withdrawn from the French Open with a thigh injury, the world number 10 said on Wednesday, describing the decision as extremely difficult.
ROME: Casper Ruud strolled into the Italian Open quarter-finals on Tuesday after easily beating home hope Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-1, as Jannik Sinner gets set for a derby with qualifier Andrea Pellegrino. Clay court specialist Ruud is yet to drop a set in Rome and he looked in fine form on a windy center court, in stark contrast to eighth seed Musetti who has clearly been struggling physically in Rome. Musetti was in tears at the end of his third-round win over Francisco Cerundolo and had to take a medical time-out for a problem with his left thigh during the second set against Ruud. The Norwegian, who was destroyed by Sinner in last year’s quarter-finals in Rome, is on the other side of the draw from the world number one and will face either Karen Khachanov or Dino Prizmic in the last eight. Croatian qualifier Prizmic is bidding to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final after announcing himself on the big stage by knocking out Novak Djokovic in the second round. Sinner will take part in a David v Goliath clash with countryman Pellegrino as he tries to extend his record-breaking run of five Masters 1000 titles. Pellegrino, 29, is 155th in the world and before this week had never played in the main draw of a top-ranked ATP event. Should Sinner prevail at the Foro Italico, he will be the first Italian to win there since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago, and would complete his collection of Master 1000 tournaments. With great rival Carlos Alcaraz out injured and Djokovic eliminated early, Sinner will be red-hot favorite as he builds toward completing the career Grand Slam at the French Open which starts next week.
MADRID, May 1 : Alexander Blockx arrived at the Madrid Open expecting to play the qualifying rounds, but the Belgian has made the most of his late promotion to the main draw after a string of withdrawals, riding a wave of confidence to the semi-finals.
