LONDON : Norwegian third seed Casper Ruud registered his maiden Wimbledon victory in his third main-draw appearance when he saw off experienced Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6(1) 7-6(9) 6-2 in the first round on Monday.
Third seed Ruud, who was runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open earlier this month, came through 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (11/9), 6-2. The Norwegian had fallen at the first-round stage in his previous two visits to the All England Club.
Casper Ruud won a match at Wimbledon for the first time on Monday with a straight-sets victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain. Third seed Ruud, who was runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open earlier this month, came through 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (11/9), 6-2.
Casper Ruud believes there will be greater opportunities to win Grand Slams when Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all retire from the men's game and he hopes to be part of the conversation. Ruud reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros earlier this month before he was convincingly beaten by his childhood idol Rafael Nadal in straight sets as the Spaniard secured his 22nd Grand Slam title. Ad/> The Norwegian says reaching the final has given him a taste for greater success in Slams in the future.
Casper Ruud says Serena Williams' comeback to tennis shows her «true love for the sport». Williams hasn't played since last year's Wimbledon, when she tore her hamstring during her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Ad/> Some questioned whether — at 40 years old and with business and family interests — she had quietly retired from the game, but she quashed those rumours this week as she arrived back at SW19.
Rafael Nadal has declared himself 'happy' with his fitness as he continues his bid to secure a calendar Grand Slam at Wimbledon next week.
Wimbledon is here and we can’t wait for an action-packed tennis tournament this summer.
