MADRID: Carlos Alcaraz became the first player to defeat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the same tournament on clay as he stormed into the Madrid Open final on Saturday (May 7).
MADRID — After beating Rafael Nadal on Friday, Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz did it again with an upset of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open on Saturday.
Carlos Alcaraz became the first player to defeat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the same tournament on clay as he stormed into the Madrid Open final on Saturday. The 19-year-old Spaniard reached his second ATP Masters final in five weeks and claimed his first-ever win over a reigning world number one, overcoming Djokovic 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) in front of a sell-out home crowd at the Caja Magica. Alcaraz now owns a tour-leading seven top-10 wins this season, and enters Sunday's final -- against Stefanos Tsitsipas or defending champion Alexander Zverev -- carrying a nine-match winning streak, having triumphed in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago.
Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Novak Djokovic a day after his maiden victory over Rafael Nadal. The home favourite came from a set down to win 6-7(5) 7-5 7-6(5) after three hours and 35 minutes in what was his first meeting with the world No 1. He will now face either Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas in a bid to win his fourth title of the season and a second Masters 1000.
MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal one day. Novak Djokovic the other.
Carlos Alcaraz produced another sensational display as he came from a set down to stun world No.1 Novak Djokovic and book a place in the Madrid Open final. The 19-year-old became the first ever player to beat both Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the same event on clay as he ousted the top seed 7-6(5) 5-7 6-7(5) after an enthralling three hours and 35 minutes inside the Manolo Santana Stadium.
Jessica Pegula will fight for the biggest title of her career when she takes on fellow first-time WTA 1000 finalist Ons Jabeur in the Madrid Open championship match. The winner will also pocket £890,000 (€1,041,570) but the prize money is nothing compared to £4.7 billion ($5.8 billion) the world No 14 is set to inherit from her father Terry, making her richer than the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal combined.
