Alexander Zverev opened his campaign at the ATP Finals in Turin on Monday evening by dispatching Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4 in their round-robin opener. In the afternoon match, Casper Ruud romped through the opening set before fighting back from 5-2 behind in the second to beat an out-sorts Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5. Germany's Zverev had last faced Russian Rublev at the same stage of the finals in 2023 and won by the same score. Zverev, a two-time winner of this event in 2018 and 2021, moved to second in the John Newcombe group, behind Norway's Ruud.
Carlos Alcaraz made a stuttering start to the ATP Finals in Turin as he suffered a shock first career defeat to world number seven Casper Ruud.
TURIN, Italy : Spain's Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock 6-1 7-5 defeat against Norway's Casper Ruud in his opening match at the ATP Finals as his hopes of winning the year-end title for the first time suffered a big blow on Monday.
Norway's Casper Ruud eased to a straight-sets victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Monday as the Spanish star's bid for a maiden ATP Finals title got off to a poor start. Ruud romped through the opening set before fighting back from 5-2 behind in the second to win 6-1, 7-5 in Turin. World number three Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year, made 34 unforced errors in an uncharacteristically errant display. It was Ruud's first victory over Alcaraz in their five career meetings.
World number two Alexander Zverev said he is thrilled with the level of tennis he has displayed this year and thinks his performances have helped quash any doubts about him that arose after a serious ankle injury in 2022.
World number one Jannik Sinner said the ATP Finals will be more special for him this time around as it gives him the chance to play on home soil in Italy, months after missing this year's Italian Open in Rome due to a hip injury.
Stefanos Tsitsipas said two-week ATP Masters 1000 events result in a drop in quality as players do not get enough time off for recovery or the intense training needed to stay in shape over a long season.
