Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland appear poised for a Sunday shoot-out to decide who leaves St Andrews with the Claret Jug after the duo ended the third round of the 150th British Open in a tie for the lead on 16 under par.

Rory McIlroy earned the biggest cheer of the week when holing a brilliant bunker shot for an eagle as he and Viktor Hovland moved clear of the field after three rounds of the Open Championship. The lead changed hands multiple times on the Old Course at St Andrews on moving day, as players put their hands up only to flatter to deceive. Ad/> Cameron Smith began the day in front, but fell back, as did his playing partner Cameron Young, while Dustin Johnson made a good start only to run out of steam.

The 150th Open Championship has reached moving day, with Rory McIlroy the main attraction after Tiger Woods missed the cut on the Old Course at St Andrews. Cameron Smith was the overnight leader, but the likes of Dustin Johnson, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler are all in the hunt.
Rory McIlroy is eyeing up Cameron Smith’s top spot at The Open as he heads into the weekend in contention for the Claret Jug, and feels he is in a “great position” to capitalise. Currently in joint third place, three shots behind Cameron Smith and one from Cameron Young, McIlroy shot 68 on Friday as he looked to back up the 66 he finished with on Thursday, and was pleased with his effort where he believes he “adapted well” to the conditions.
