The failure of India's famed top-order against a high-quality pace attack in a pressure game put Australia in firm control of the World Test Championship final in London on Thursday. Ravindra Jadeja (48 off 51 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (29 batting off 71) offered hope to the partisan Indian supporters at The Oval with a 71-run stand off 100 balls before the former fell to Nathan Lyon 20 minutes before close of play. India were reeling at 151 for five at stumps in response to Australia's first innings score of 469, trailing by 318 runs.

The World Test Championship final between India and Australia kicked off at the Oval, London on Wednesday. India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first against the Pat Cummins-led side. The Rahul Dravid-coached team went in with a four-pronged pace attack and preferred Ravindra Jadeja over seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as the lone spinner. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Usman Khawaja to give India a really good start before David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stitched 69 runs for the second wicket for Australia. Shardul Thakur got better of Warner and then Mohammed Shami produced a ripper to get rid of Labuschagne.

Australia captain Pat Cummins doesn't mind staying a bit undercooked going into the high-octane WTC final against India rather than playing two months of T20 cricket and landing up jaded for a gruelling English summer. Asked if the bulk of the Australian side (save Cameron Green, David Warner in IPL and Marnus Labuschagne in County cricket) would be a bit rusty with virtually no game time since the India series, the skipper on Sunday begged to differ. "Breaks are rare to come by," said the modern day great, who has 217 Test wickets from 49 games.
