Arsenal kept themselves in the Women’s Super League title picture and secured North London bragging rights with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham. The Gunners arrived at Brisbane Road on the back of a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, but showed no signs of a hangover as they made a rapid start. Ad Spurs weathered the storm of goals from Stina Blackstenius and Caitlin Foord, and a Beth England penalty cut the gap but Arsenal went through the gears after the break to romp to victory.
ROME: Salma Paralluelo curled a shot into the net to help Barcelona beat Roma 1-0 in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League quarterfinals in front of a record-setting crowd on Tuesday.
Arsenal produced a battling performance at the Allianz Arena as they went down to a 1-0 defeat in their Women's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich. Lea Schuller's first-half header saw Bayern home, yet Arsenal will fancy their chances of turning the tie around in next week's return. They created a number of opportunities, being denied by goal-line clearances and the woodwork as Bayern ultimately did enough to record a 13th-successive victory in all competitions this season.
A tremendous header from Lea Schuller was enough to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final. Bayern started the stronger but Arsenal gradually eased themselves into the game.
Down, but not out. As 1-0 defeats go this was the vaguely encouraging kind for Arsenal, who even in defeat will leave Germany with the knowledge that progress remains within their grasp. Lea Schüller’s towering header was the difference between the sides here, but over the 90 minutes Arsenal created enough chances to offer plenty of hope for the second leg at the Emirates Stadium. The burning question, of course, is whether Arsenal will manage to take any of them. Twenty-five shots came and went for them, seven of them to the luckless Stina Blackstenius. But Bayern really did need to be at their resilient best in a pulsating second half, as an injury-depleted Arsenal managed to exert some serious pressure against a team that has conceded just four league goals all season. Caitlin Foord was probably Arsenal’s most dangerous player, cutting in off the left flank and creating all kinds of problems.
LONDON: Chelsea's Guro Reiten scored from the spot and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd got her first goal for the club as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 on Wednesday ahead of a top-of-the-table Women's Super League clash with Manchester United on Sunday.
Chelsea closed the gap to Manchester United at the top of the Women's Super League to one point after they comfortably ran out 3-1 winners over Brighton.
