The FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup will be settled this weekend in Sachsenring as the season comes to its conclusion in Saxony, Germany, with four drivers in contention for the Drivers’ title in Race DE. After an exciting first season as an FIA World Cup, with racing taking place in France, Hungary, Spain, Belgium and Italy, four drivers can take the title this weekend, with all three manufacturers represented in the title fight.
Mikel Azcona was crowned King of the Weekend after an extraordinary fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, at Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi where searing hot temperatures gave all competitors a stern test in the glorious Regione Lazio. Azcona took his first King of the Weekend win as his Hyundai Motorsport N squad were victorious for their first weekend too as they overtook Romeo Ferraris in the standings after a weekend which promised much for the local squad but ultimately delivered a very different weekend than that expected.
Certainly one of the more intriguing newcomers to burst from the starting gates this season, Bruno Spengler marked his return to saloon car racing by making his FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup with Romeo Ferraris. While pressure might have come with a profile as lofty as his, Spengler quickly adapted to the rigours of both the ETCR’s innovative race weekend format and the sheer performance of his 500KW ‘Italian stallion’ saloon.
CUPRA EKS driver Adrien Tambay enjoyed a perfect Pool FURIOUS DHL Super Final to confirm his status as the first-ever FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup King of the Season in Sachsenring for Race DE. Tambay enjoyed a faultless weekend and was only denied the King of the Weekend crown by team-mate Tom Blomqvist setting a faster lap time in qualifying – the tie-break decider with the pair scoring the same across an exciting weekend of racing at the superlative Saxony circuit.
CUPRA EKS driver Adrien Tambay took a step closer to taking the first-ever FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup title with a win in the first Pool FURIOUS Quarter Final where the Frenchman dominated for 98% of the time, even if Hyundai Motorsport N’s Norbert Michelisz stalked his prey in epic fashion on the last lap to take the lead at the start of the final corner, only to lose it moments later as Tambay crossed the line just ahead. Mikel Azcona meanwhile took the FURIOUS Quarter Final Two win for Hyundai Motorsport N after an early fight with CUPRA EKS man Jordi Gené and late dice with hithertoo race-long leader Luca Filippi whose Romeo Ferraris Giulia ETCR had led from pole till the final corner too.
Romeo Ferraris head to this weekend’s finale of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup season sitting in third place in the Manufacturers’ standings, just two points adrift of their nearest rival, Hyundai Motorsport in second spot, meaning that the team runner-up spot battle is still very much alive. Ad Lead driver for the squad, Maxime Martin, is in fourth position in the Drivers’ standings, and still has a mathematical chance of taking the title. Very much a driver with an impressive learning curve in his first season of ETCR racing, Romeo Ferraris driver Maxime Martin certainly came on trong to take the King of the Weekend crown in Zolder as well as being very much in contention last time out in Vallelunga before being forced to miss his DHL Super Final after the Giulia ETCR she shares with Bruno Spengler was damaged in Spengler’s crash. Ad Heading into the season finale in Sachsening, Martin still has a mathematic chance to take the first FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup title and will certainly be in contention to add to his nine wins so far in the series.
Romeo Ferraris completed an intense weekend at the Vallelunga circuit, for its home round in the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup. It wasn’t a weekend which went to plan for the manufacturer based in Opera, Milan, as despite showing themselves to be right on the money in terms of race pace, the squad had to finish earlier than foreseen a weekend that could have led to the second consecutive victory after the one in Zolder.
