England cricket team fast bowler Jofra Archer said that Indian batters were lucky as his team slumped to a huge loss in the first T20I encounter in Kolkata on Wednesday. Archer picked up 2 wickets for England but Indian batters reigned supreme with opener Abhishek Sharma hitting 8 sixes in his innings. Chasing a mere 132, India made short work of the match and won the encounter with 43 balls to go. Archer said that the Indian batters were 'extremely lucky' as a number of balls were miscued high up in the air but they ended up dropping in no-man's land.
With the amount of freedom that the Indian T20I team is being offered, captain Suryakumar Yadav said, his side wants to play a "bit differently" from the way they played in the T20 World Cup 2024. The calendar year changed, but India's threatening approach in the T20Is remained the same. After ending 2024 on a high note, India picked up the momentum and kickstarted T20Is in 2025 with a bang. With 'Bazball' taking over white-ball cricket, India's 'Gamball' ensured England's new era began on a disappointing note. Brendon McCullum watched his side getting blown away by T20 World Cup champions in his first T20I as England's white-ball head coach.
Credited with introducing the ultra-aggressive 'Bazball' brand of batting, England coach Brendon McCullum aims to "play very watchful style of cricket" in the limited overs series against Gautam Gambhir's India. While McCullum has been credited extensively for revolutionising England's red-ball cricket, his counterpart Gambhir has been in the line of fire over the last few months, owing to a poor run of results. While recent results a different story, McCullum still rates Gambhir extremely high as a 'leader', having worked with him in the past.
England Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday announced their Playing Eleven of the first T20I match against India at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The first T20I match between England and India will be played on Wednesday at Eden Gardens at 7 pm IST. Phil Salt along with Ben Duckett will open for England in Kolkata. Salt will keep the wicket instead of skipper Jos Buttler in the first match of the 20-over series.
England begin their white-ball era under Brendon McCullum in a Twenty20 series against India beginning in Kolkata on Wednesday with the coach promising the same attacking brand of cricket that has been the hallmark of his coaching.
Gautam Gambhir's position as head coach will be "revaluated" on the basis of India's Champions Trophy performance next month amid concerns that there is discontent in the dressing room due to his push to end the long-prevalent "superstar culture" in the team. Since Gambhir took over in July last year, the Indian team has lost six out of 10 Tests and also a bilateral ODI series in Sri Lanka.
Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell heaped praises on young England batter Harry Brook, comparing his performances and approach to legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Brook is one of the newest faces of world cricket, having made a name for himself with some impactful knocks across all formats. Tests are Brook's best format so far and he would be looking to make an impact in the Ashes series against Australia away from home later this year.
