ABU DHABI: World No. 2 Ons Jabeur, the first Arab to reach a Grand Slam final, will return to Abu Dhabi this December to defend her Mubadala World Tennis Championship crown.
Two-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur and former US Open champion Emma Raducanu will contest the one-off women's match at the 2022 Mubadala World Tennis Championship, organisers confirmed on Wednesday.
Iga Swiatek's victory in the US Open saw her extend her lead at the top of the WTA rankings Monday while beaten finalist Ons Jabeur moved up to second.
Former World No. 9 Andrea Petkovic played her last Grand Slam match on Tuesday, losing to World No. 13 Belinda Bencic 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 in the first round of the US Open. Petkovic, 34, announced her plans to retire after the US Open. "I was glad that it ended like this, with Belinda, somebody I love and respect so much," Petkovic told reporters after the match. "Also that I could bring to the last match everything that I brought to my career, which was grit and tenacity and just respect for the game and for my opponents," she added.
Andrea Petkovic was visibly emotional on Tuesday as she headed into retirement following a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 loss to Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the first round at the US Open. Petkovic, who announced her decision to retire on Sunday, has won seven singles titles over her career and reached a ranking of world number nine in 2011. The 34-year-old, currently ranked 104th, made the 2014 French Open semi-final and three additional Grand Slam quarter-finals in 2011.
