SYDNEY : Jasprit Bumrah won the toss for India after replacing the axed Rohit Sharma as captain and elected to bat first in the fifth and final test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.
SYDNEY :All-rounder Beau Webster will make his test debut for Australia in place of the dropped Mitchell Marsh in the fifth test against India on Friday, captain Pat Cummins said on Thursday.
India pacer Akash Deep was on Thursday ruled out of the the fifth and final Test against Australia starting here on Friday owing to a stiff back. Akash had taken five wickets from two Tests in Brisbane and Melbourne so far. He was a bit unlucky to not get more as multiple catches were dropped off his bowling during the two games. "Akash Deep is out with back issue," India coach Gautam Gambhir said in the pre-match press conference in Sydney.
Out-of-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh was axed Thursday from Australia's team for the series-deciding fifth Test against India in Sydney with Beau Webster to make his debut. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc retained his place for Friday's match despite carrying a rib niggle and will line up in the attack alongside Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon. "Mitchy obviously hasn't quite got the runs or wickets he would have liked this series and felt like it was time for a freshen up," said skipper Cummins.
Sean Abbott and Beau Webster are linked by a common thread. They are just about there but not quite there when it comes to selection in Australia's final Test eleven. They get summoned for national duty, attend nets and then go back to domestic commitments, only to be called back again raising hope of wearing that elusive Baggy Green. Abbott, 32, has played 56 International games since his white ball debut a decade ago, but is still waiting to wear the whites and hold a red Kookaburra. Webster, 31, is a proper domestic doyen with 93 games under his belt in which he has made 5297 runs and grabbed 148 wickets.
The Australian cricket team has made multiple changes in its squad for the 4th and the 5th Test against India - in Melbourne and Sydney respectively. One of the casualties of the changes that have been made was opening batter Nathan McSweeney who was touted to be the long-term replacement for retired David Warner. The man replacing him is 19-year-old Sam Konstas who impressed many with his century in the Prime Minister's XI practice game against Team India in Canberra before the pink-ball Test.
Team India will look to bounce from a 10-wicket defeat as they take on Australia in the third Test of a five-match series, starting Saturday at the Gabba in Brisbane. The series is tied at 1-1 as India won the series-opener by 295 runs in Perth, before Australia outplayed them in the pink-ball Test last week. India are likely to make a couple of changes with Akash Deep and Washington Sundar likely to get the nod over Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana, respectively.
