Cummins had returned home after the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India to be with his ailing mother who was in palliative care. A few days later, Cummins' mother sadly passed away. In the pacer's absence, Steve Smith led the Australian team in the 3rd and 4th Test against Australia. Speaking of the development, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Smith will continue to lead Australia on the India tour.
Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar harbours no "ill feeling" after being sent back from the Indian Test tour without a game because he knows it's "ruthless" in top-level cricket. Agar had landed in India as one of the senior spinners in the Australian squad but returned home after not finding a place in the XI for the first two Tests with uncapped off-spinner Todd Murphy and left-armer Matthew Kuhnemann preferred over him. Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh will make their international returns from lengthy injury layoffs after being named Thursday in Australia's one-day squad for the series in India. All-rounder Maxwell broke his leg and underwent surgery in November after slipping and falling during a friend's 50th birthday party. Marsh went under the knife soon after for a long-standing left ankle problem, with loose bone fragments removed and cartilage repaired. They both return for ODIs in Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Chennai between March 17 and 22, giving Australia an early look at conditions ahead of the World Cup in India later this year.

Australia's Ashton Agar will take no further part in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy against India as the all-rounder was released from the squad. According to cricket.com.au, Agar has flown home to Perth and will represent Western Australia in the ongoing Sheffield Shield. Agar is the third player from the side to return home after David Warner and Josh Hazlewood, who were ruled out of the series due to injuries. Agar was overlooked for the first two Tests, with Australia opting for Todd Murphy and Matt Kuhnemann, who weren't even part of the initial squad.
The 2023 Border-Gavaskar series is going from bad to worse for Australia.
