"Want To Work On My Consistency": Arshdeep Singh To NDTV After Being Named In India T20I Squad

23-year-old pacer Arshdeep Singh has played in four seasons of Indian Premier League (IPL) so far, and has managed to create a reputation for himself and that is -- being the death overs specialist. The Punjab Kings bowler can nail yorkers at will at the death and this is the biggest reason, that he has received a call-up to the senior national side for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, beginning June 9 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

'This happiness can't be explained in words': Death-overs specialist Arshdeep Singh looking forward to potential India debut against South Africa

Arshdeep Singh was getting ready for his IPL team Punjab Kings' last league match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad when he got a call from the Indian team management. The call was about his maiden call-up to the Indian team. Arshdeep had a big smile on his face but within seconds, the 23-year-old pacer shifted his focus to the next match he was going to play. After Punjab Kings won that match, by 5 wickets, the team came back to the dressing room and celebrated Arshdeep's success. The 23-year-old from Guna in Madhya Pradesh went wicketless in that match, but was again very economical, giving away just 25 runs in his 4 overs. He had done enough to impress the selectors overall. This is his fourth IPL season and he has taken 40 wickets overall in 37 matches and has a strike rate of 18.93. Arshdeep's ability to bowl wide yorkers, targeting the block-hole, and not giving away too many runs, earned him an India call up and a place in the squad for the home series against South Africa next month. India are scheduled to play a five-match T20I series against South Africa, starting June 9. TimesofIndia.com caught up with Arshdeep, who signed off IPL 2022 with 10 wickets in 14 matches at an economy rate of 7.70, to talk about his maiden India call-up, sharing the ball with South African star pacer Kagiso Rabada, on being tagged as a death-overs specialist, playing under KL Rahul and much more.

"MS Dhoni Has...": BCCI President Sourav Ganguly On Why Rishabh Pant Should Not Be Compared With Former Indian Cricket Team Captain

Since the time MS Dhoni retired from international cricket, the hunt has been on to find his worthy successor in the wicketkeeper-batter role. Rishabh Pant has emerged as the front-runner in the role. The Delhi Capitals captain has impressed with his performances for the Indian cricket team. Pant's stellar shows include Test centuries in overseas conditions along with his power-hitting skills. He has also improved his wicketkeeping by leaps and bounds. However, Pant did not set the IPL 2022 on fire with his performance as he scored 340 runs in 14 matches at an average of 30.91.

How Arshdeep Singh 'yorked' his way into the Indian team

Arshdeep Singh says clarity of mind, attained through yoga and meditation, has helped him perfect the art of bowling yorkers, a rare ability that has pushed him into the Indian T20 side for the South Africa series. The 23-year-old from Kharar humbly accepts the success that has come his way in the IPL but says he really had to "earn everything". It may seem that landing yorkers, at will, comes naturally to the lanky fast bowler but he put in the extra work with his personal coach Jaswant Rai ahead of the IPL to hone his coveted skill. Yoga and meditation has also helped him stay calm in high-pressure scenarios. "It (meditation) clears the mind. When there is pressure, there is no substitute to clarity. Being able to stay calm surely helps in a big way," Arshdeep told PTI.
