India batsmen Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been recalled to the Twenty20 squad for the Asia Cup but seamer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to injury, the country's cricket governing body BCCI said on Monday.
Virat Kohli and a fit-again vice-captain KL Rahul were back in the 15-member Indian squad for the Asia Cup while senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah missed out owing to back injury. Rahul, who did not feature in the T20 series against West Indies due to COVID-19, has recuperated from sports hernia surgery and is back as vice-captain. The notable names dropped from the main squad are batter Shreyas Iyer and left-arm spinner Axar Patel. Seamer Deepak Chahar, who has had a four month lay-off due to hamstring tear and back injury was also among reserves. The other absentee from the squad is pacer Harshal Patel owing to rib injury. "Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were not available for selection owing to injuries. They are currently undergoing rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru," the BCCI said on Twitter.
India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey is looking at the ongoing T20 International series against the West Indies to identify the team's bowling attack for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. "It's all part of our preparation for the the (T20) World Cup. Right now, we are looking at different options that we have and giving opportunity to youngsters to find out who does the job for us," Mhambrey told reporters after the second T20 which India lost by five wickets on Monday night. Young Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh said that using variations, especially the slower ones, on a sticky wicket was the key to his success in the T20 series-opener against the West Indies. Arshdeep (2/24 in 4 overs), who featured in the first T20I against England at Southampton earlier this month, picked up two wickets on his return to the national side. "It was a good experience. I am happy with my performance. The team won, so the happiness doubled. Due to a break, I am playing after a long time. So, I want to work with Paras (Mhambrey) sir and improve on my areas," Arshdeep said at the press conference.
