Rajya Sabha on Wednesday took up a bill that seeks to provide an independent mechanism for anti-doping adjudication and legal sanctity to anti-doping agencies. The National Anti-Doping Bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha last week, seeks to provide a statutory framework in the form of legislation for the prohibition of doping in sports in the country. Introducing the bill for discussion and passage in the Upper House, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur said it intends to accomplish building institutional capabilities in anti-doping, enable the hosting of major sporting events, protect rights of all sportspersons, ensure time-bound justice to athletes and enhance cooperation among agencies in fighting doping in sports.

Anti-Doping Bill Gets Lok Sabha Nod

Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a bill which seeks to provide a statutory framework for the functioning of the National Anti-Doping Agency and the National Dope Testing Laboratory. The National Anti-Doping Bill was passed by a voice vote along with certain official amendments moved by the government. Responding to debate on the bill, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur said it will promote sports and protect the interest of sportspersons. He said it will also help enhance dope testing facilities in the country.

Lovlina Borgohain confirmed on Wednesday that her coach Sandhya Gurung has got the accreditation for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, starting July 28 in Birmingham. The development comes a day after the boxer's viral social media post regarding the issue. The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist had on Monday claimed that she has faced "mental harassment" due to the constant removal of her coaches, who helped her win an Olympic medal, from her training process and were later allowed entry after several requests. She added that her coach Sandhya Gurung had not been allowed entry into the Commonwealth Games Village.

FIFA tells All India Football Federation to hold elections by September 15 to avoid ban

FIFA has told India's football association to complete changes to its constitution and elect new office-bearers by September 15 to avoid being banned, officials said. India's highest court disbanded the All India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee last month after it failed to hold elections on time and amend its regulations in line with rules stipulated by the national sports code. The court then appointed a three-member committee to run the body, amend the AIFF's constitution and conduct elections that have been pending for 18 months.
