After watching Kamila Valieva fall several times in her free skate routine, her fellow competitors knew they would be able to have their moment on the podium as the 15-year-old missed out on an Olympic medal. The teenager was left in tears after taking to the ice last to perform and scoring 141.93 points to leave her in fourth place, despite starting the day as the leader after her emphatic short program performance.
Russia's Kamila Valieva placed top in the Olympic figure skating short programme Tuesday, after being allowed to compete despite testing positive for a banned substance before the Games. The 15-year-old scored 82.16, and goes into Thursday's decisive free programme with a narrow lead over her compatriot Anna Shcherbakova, who came second with 80.20.
The gold medallist said she felt empty. The silver medallist pledged never to skate again. The favourite left in tears without saying a word.
Kamila Valieva, the teenager at the centre of a doping scandal that has shaken the Beijing Olympics, finished fourth in the women's figure skating final on Thursday after an error-strewn performance handed Russian teammate Anna Shcherbakova gold. Shcherbakova scored 255.95 overall to seal the title, while Valieva, who was allowed to compete despite failing a doping test before the Games, fell several times and slipped out of the medal positions in Beijing. It was a major upset for 15-year-old Valieva, who looked completely broken at the end of her programme.
Russian figure skater Alexandra Trusova was at the centre of some upsetting scenes after the conclusion of the ladies’ singles event at the Winter Olympics. Trusova claimed silver after the free skate event on Thursday, with team-mate Kamila Valieva falling from first to fourth and out of medal contention following a succession of errors.
