The 2022 World Figure Skating Championships will be missing some of its biggest names in Montpellier, with Russian and Belarusian athletes blocked from competing. The International Skating Union was one of a number of sporting organisations to block representatives from the countries competing, following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The World Figure Skating Championships will be held in the French city of Montpellier between 21-27 March, live on Eurosport and discovery+, one month after the best in the world dazzled at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Russian and Belarusian athletes will be banned from the event, meaning new Olympic gold medallist Anna Shcherbakova will not compete — nor will controversial teenager Kamila Valieva.
The international union that governs skating has banned athletes from Russia and Belarus from its competitions across figure skating and speed skating. The International Olympic Committee took the unprecedented step on Monday of calling sports organisations around the world to ban the two nations from competing to “protect the integrity of competitions for the safety of all the participants." Ad/> The International Skating Union (ISU) said in a statement: «With immediate effect and until further notice, no skaters belonging to the ISU Members in Russia (Russian Skating Union and the Figure Skating Federation of Russia) and Belarus (Skating Union of Belarus) shall be invited or allowed to participate in International ice skating competitions including ISU Championships and other ISU Events.
The International Skating Union has become the latest sporting body to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competition – in a move which is likely to see Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old at the centre of the Winter Olympics doping scandal, barred from the World Figure Skating Championships later this month.
Russia was excluded from all international ice skating events as sporting sanctions continued to mount Tuesday following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
