Andy Murray expressed sympathy for Naomi Osaka after she was rattled by a heckler during her second-round loss on Saturday night at Indian Wells but said unruly fans were an unfortunate part of sports. Osaka was thrown off her game and began to cry after a person screamed, "Naomi, you suck!" early on in her eventual 6-0, 6-4 loss to Veronika Kudermetova. After the match, Osaka spoke directly to the otherwise supportive crowd, saying the incident reminded her of the abuse Venus and Serena Williams received at the tournament in 2001, which led them to boycott the event for more than a decade. "It's a difficult one," Murray told reporters after his second-round loss on Sunday.
Andrey Rublev pushed his ATP winning streak to 10 matches on Sunday, shaking off a slow start to beat Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-4 in his second-round opener at the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters. Rublev fell 4-2 down before breaking 51st-ranked Koepfer twice to pocket the first set. He finished with 32 winners against the German and won 11 of 15 points at the net to put the match away. But the second set was also close. After breaking for a 4-3 lead, Rublev promptly surrendered his serve, but he broke Koepfer to lead 5-4 and then survived three break points to close it out with a service winner. Rublev, on the rise after titles in Marseille and Dubai this year, next faces Frances Tiafoe, who beat Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American clash.

Murray had wins at Wimbledon and Rotterdam on his record against Bublik, but on the outdoor hard courts at Indian Wells it was the Kazakh — as well as his use of the drop shot and booming serve — who prevailed 7-6(9) 6-3. Ad/> Murray made a strong start with an imposing opening hold, and put Bublik under pressure in the second game but some big serves — which were a staple through the match — secured a hold from 0-40 down.
