MADRID — Novak Djokovic eased to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hubert Hurkacz on Friday as he advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open where he faces a tough Spanish test.
Novak Djokovic reached his seventh Madrid semi-final on Friday, easing past Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 6-4 to record a 30th career victory in the Spanish capital. The world number one awaits one of two Spaniards, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, in what will be a highly-anticipated last-four showdown. "I don't really care who is on the opposite side of the net to be honest. I just want to be playing better and better each day. For me this is the most important thing right now, my focus and my intention is really focusing on myself," said Djokovic.
El que gane… contra Nadal o Alcaraz
Felix Auger-Aliassime swept aside young Italian Jannik Sinner as he rediscovered some of his early-season form after some recent struggles. The Canadian eighth-seed conceded just three games in a 6-1 6-2 win on Court Three in Spain’s capital, sending down five aces compared to his younger rival’s sole effort. Ad/> Auger-Aliassime forced eight break points, taking half of them as he swatted away Sinner and moved into the quarter-finals.
Rafael Nadal said on Thursday he drew inspiration from Real Madrid's heroic comeback against Manchester City less than 24 hours previously as he survived a scare from David Goffin, saving four match points en route to a tight 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (11/9) victory in the Madrid Open.
Novak Djokovic has opened up on the "mental and emotional" toll his ordeal in Australia caused him. The world No 1 had his visa cancelled twice before eventually being deported on the eve of the Australian Open, and admitted he "underestimated" the impact the saga would have on him when he finally returned to tennis months later.
Andrey Rublev reached the seventh Masters 1000 quarter-final of his career with a 7-6(9/7), 7-5 result against Dan Evans of Great Britain in Madrid on Thursday. It was the second blow of the day for the British as Andy Murray had earlier pulled out of his meeting with Novak Djokovic because of illness. Rublev bounced back from 1-3 down in the opening set, and saved a set point in the tiebreak before securing a lead in one hour and 15 minutes.
