(Reuters) - The International Paralympic Committee will meet on Wednesday to discuss Russia ahead of this week's Beijing Winter Games, as athletes from Ukraine and other nations urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and IPC to suspend Russia and Belarus.

The presidents of the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee are being urged to ban Russia and Belarus from sporting events, following the invasion of Ukraine. Ahead of the Beijing Paralympics starting this Friday, 60 athletes from Ukraine and 14 other countries have sent a letter direct to IOC boss Thomas Bach and his IPC counterpart, Andrew Parsons.
Athletes from Ukraine and other nations have called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend Russia and Belarus and ban their athletes from events immediately.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian skeleton rider Vladyslav Heraskevych flashed a sign at the Olympics: «No war in Ukraine.» On Sunday, he was hunkered down about 150 kilometers (93 miles) outside of his nation's capital with weapons nearby in case he needs to defend his country.
