SYDNEY : A new mixed-sex $15 million tournament featuring teams from 18 nations playing matches across three Australian cities will kick off the 2023 international tennis season, Tennis Australia announced on Friday.
Prize money on the Challenger Tour will jump 60 per cent next year from its 2022 level as part of a plan to boost earnings for players on the feeder circuit, the men's ATP Tour said on Friday.
The ATP has announced its China swing series of tournaments will not take place again this year because of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in the country.
ATP Tour on Thursday updated its end-of-year calendar, with six tournaments added to replace the Covid-enforced cancellation of the 2022 China swing for the third year in succession. "ATP has today confirmed the Shanghai Masters, China Open (Beijing), Chengdu Open, and Zhuhai Championships will not take place in 2022 due to ongoing restrictions related to COVID-19," a statement for the men's tour announced.
The ATP have confirmed the cancellation of tournaments in China this season due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in the country. Four events, including the Shanghai Masters, were scheduled for September and October but the country’s Covid-19 situation means the tournaments have been scrapped.
China hosted the Winter Olympics under strict health protocols in February but almost every other international sporting event in the country this year has been cancelled or postponed. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi told Reuters last month that the prospects of the 2022 China swing were bleak. "This marks the third year of cancellation for the ATP's China swing, typically hosted in September and October and last staged in 2019, prior to the pandemic," the men's governing body said in a statement.
Rafael Nadal welcomed the proposed reforms to the ATP Masters 1000 events, to create more high-profile match-ups between the world’s top players across the season. From 2023, the ATP Tour calendar will allow the Masters 1000s in Madrid, Rome and Shanghai to become 12-day events alongside Indian Wells and Miami.
