List of U.S. Open men's singles champions since the tournament began in 1881:
Carlos Alcaraz overcame the gutsy Frances Tiafoe in five brutal sets, 6-7(6) 6-3 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3, to reach his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open after a classic clash. The third seed, who reached the quarter-finals of the French Open earlier in the season before losing out to Alexander Zverev, lost the opening set to the home favourite but managed to respond superbly.
NEW YORK : World number four Carlos Alcaraz used his mighty forehand to swat aside American Jenson Brooksby 6-3 6-3 6-3 in a superb third-round performance at the U.S. Open on Saturday.
With his shock first-round loss at the US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas is out of the race to reach world No. 1 after the US Open — but four players remain in the hunt for the coveted top spot in the ATP Tour rankings.
Top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Iga Swiatek were heavy favorites to claim their respective titles as play began at the U.S. Open on Monday.
Cameron Norrie is looking to build on his breakthrough Wimbledon run by seizing his opportunity at the US Open.
Rafael Nadal said Friday he is saddened by Novak Djokovic's absence from the US Open as he returns to the tournament for the first time in three years. The Spanish legend has not played in New York since defeating Daniil Medvedev in five sets to lift the 2019 title. Nadal has added three more Grand Slam singles titles to his haul since that victory, taking his total to 22 -- the all-time men's record. While the 36-year-old will be looking to add to that tally over the next fortnight in New York, Nadal admitted on Friday that the absence of Djokovic left him "very sad." Djokovic confirmed on Thursday he will play no part in the tournament after refusing to get vaccinated against Covid-19 -- placing him at odds with US government travel requirements for international visitors.
The then 18-year-old rocketed to tennis stardom a year ago when he beat third-seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round on his way to becoming the youngest man to reach the quarter-final at Flushing Meadows. He retired in the quarters against young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime but had already earned his reputation as one of the fiercest competitors among tennis's next generation.
