S aracens are favourites for Saturday’s Premiership final but do not underestimate the power of purpose. Every individual needs a purpose, it becomes their fuel, and the same can be said for every team. That is not to say Saracens do not have one but what I love about this Sale side is how clear their purpose is – to put northern rugby back on the map. La Rochelle will face Exeter in the Heineken Champions Cup semi-finals in Bordeaux after they clinically dispatched three-time winners Saracens 24-10.
Ospreys wheel out their big guns as they look to take another step forward in Europe — with opponents Saracens able to call on some significant firepower themselves in today’s round of 16 Heineken Champions Cup clash in Barnet (3pm)
P rofessional rugby is increasingly a numbers game. Pounds, euros, metres carried, kick percentages, set-piece efficiency. Some of it is useful information, some of it clutters the imagination. It is also worth keeping in mind that one of the greatest strengths of a top player cannot be fully measured. To borrow the old saying, it’s not the size of the dog that matters, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.
Springbok fly-half Handre Pollard scored 14 points as Leicester overcame Saracens 24-18 on Sunday after surviving a second-half fightback by the English Premiership leaders.
