Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas made it through to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open on Thursday, increasing the prospect of a last four clash between the pair. World number three Zverev saw off Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) in the early match on centre court at the Foro Italico to set-up a last-eight clash with either Cristian Garin or Maran Cilic. The German was unruffled in his victory over Australian De Minaur as he looks to bounce back from being trounced by teenage phenomenon Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid final on Sunday.
Rafael Nadal eased into the last 16 of the Italian Open on Wednesday with a straightforward 6-3, 6-1 win over John Isner, while Alexander Zverev beat Sebastian Baez. Third seed Nadal made short work of Isner as he bids for an 11th title in Rome, the King of Clay seeing off his American opponent in one hour and 17 minutes under blazing sunshine at the Foro Italico. A quarter-final loser to countryman Carlos Alcaraz in Madrid, Nadal can profit from the in-form teenager's absence in the Italian capital to win the last big clay event before the French Open later this month.

Carlos Alcaraz comfortably saw off compatriot Pablo Carreno to lift the Barcelona Open — his third title of an already remarkable 2022. The 6-3 6-2 win was all the more remarkable given that due to rain delays, Alcaraz had played his semi-final earlier in the day — a 3h40 win over Alex de Minaur — in which he saved two match points. Ad/> The victory means Alcaraz — still only 18 — will ascend into the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time, at the same stage Rafa Nadal did so after winning his first Barcelona crown 17 years ago.
