A shock looked to be on the cards when unseeded Davidovich Fokina broke the 13th seed midway through the second set, but Berrettini found his range and held off a spirited fightback to win 3-6 7-6(2) 6-3 4-6 6-2. Ad Berrettini, who beat Andy Murray in the previous round in four sets, will next face either fifth seed Casper Ruud or Corentin Moutet.

The situation went from bad to worse for the 2012 champion in the second set, when a dejected Murray tossed his racket towards his bench after handing 13th seed Berrettini the break with a double fault in the ninth game. But the tables turned as the 26-year-old Italian was unable to convert any of eight break point chances in the third set and handed his 35-year-old opponent the momentum in the tiebreak with a handful of unforced errors. Berrettini, who beat Murray in the Stuttgart final earlier this year, said he tried to play more "brave" in the final set, getting the critical break in the eighth game after forcing the two-time Wimbledon winner into a backhand error. "I guess you learn from the past a little bit," said Berrettini, who clinched the contest with an ace to cheers from the rowdy crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He now faces good friend Taylor Fritz after the American crushed Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-1. "Physically, I didn't feel the best, but you have to keep pushing, keep trying," Kyrgios said. "Alejandro's a hell of a player, he's got a lot of shots at his disposal. I had to serve well and dictate," the Montreal quarter-finalist aded. "It was tricky conditions out there, the courts are a lot more lively than Montreal, it was harder to control the ball."

But 20-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic was made to work after falling a break down in the opening two sets against his 81st-ranked opponent. "Now we have got to 80 wins, let's get to 100," said Djokovic. Djokovic, 35, is attempting to win a fourth successive Wimbledon title and join a select group. In the Open era, only Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer have managed such a streak at the All England Club.
