The club vs country debate has resurfaced once again after all the South African players with an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract decided to skip the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh to feature in the cash-rich league. The likes of Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, among others will leave for India after the conclusion of the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh to take part in IPL 2022, which begins on March 26, five days before the first South Africa-Bangladesh Test. This comes after South Africa's skipper Dean Elgar had called it a "loyalty test" for the IPL-bound players.
A feisty, resolute, and resourceful Bangladesh side not only won their first-ever ODI in South Africa when they beat the hosts by 38 runs in the first ODI at SuperSport Park on Friday, but further dented SA's hopes of qualifying automatically for next year's World Cup.
South Africa vs Bangladesh 1st ODI Live Score: Bangladesh openers got off to a good start after South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl in the first one-day international at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday. South Africa were without wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock because of illness. Bangladesh captain Tamim said he was confident about a team packed with all-rounders as well as some promising fast bowlers. The three-match series is part of the International Cricket Council's World Cup Super League which counts towards qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
South Africa will be without their entire first-choice pace attack comprising Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen as well as batters Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen as they chose the IPL over the Test series. Cricket South Africa had said it would be leaving it to the players to make the decision whether to play in the IPL or in the series, which the Test captain Dean Elgar had called a "litmus test of loyalty". Middle-order batter Khaya Zondo got his maiden Test call-up and uncapped quick Daryn Dupavillon also found a place in the squad.
Proteas limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma said it wasn't an ideal situation not to have your best players available for a series because of the Indian Premier League.
The South African Test side for the two-match home series against Bangladesh "will be without its IPL players," announced Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday. The likes of Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and Rassie van der Dussen were not included in the 15-man squad released by CSA. Jansen, Markram, Ngidi and Dussen featured in South Africa's 2-1 series victory against India and also in the away series against New Zealand. But the five cricketers along with Quinton de Kock, Dwaine Pretorius, David Miller have got IPL contracts which clashes with the Bangladesh Tests. IPL 2022 begins from March 26 while the first South Africa-Bangladesh Test is scheduled to begin on March 31.
CAPE TOWN : South Africa on Thursday called up batsman Khaya Zondo to their test team for a two-match series against Bangladesh but have been forced to name a weakened 15-man squad.
