Afghanistan wins toss and elects to bat against Australia in must-win Champions Trophy game

LAHORE: Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the coin toss under overcast conditions and elected to bat in Afghanistan’s must-win last Group B game of the Champions Trophy against Australia on Friday. Afghanistan made a big turnaround in the tournament when it eliminated England with a stunning eight-run victory at the same venue on Wednesday. Afghanistan, which lost the first match to South Africa by 107 runs, went with the same playing XI for the third successive game and banked on three spinners — Mohammad Nabi, Noor Ahmad and ace leg-spinner Rashid Khan. Australia has three points from its record-breaking 352-run chase against England and a point from its washout game against South Africa at Rawalpindi. Australia named an unchanged side. New Zealand and India have already qualified for the semifinals from Group A with host Pakistan and Bangladesh eliminated. Lineups: Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (captain), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi Australia: Matthew Short, Travis Head, Steven Smith (captain), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

Shubman Gill Consolidates Top Spot In ICC ODI Rankings, Virat Kohli Re-Enters Top Five

India opener Shubman Gill on Wednesday consolidated his position atop the ICC ODI Batting Rankings after playing a big role in his team's qualification for the semifinals of the Champions Trophy. Gill, who scored a match-winning 101 not out against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan in Group A matches played in Dubai this past week, has gained 21 rating points and moved up to 817 rating points, increasing the gap with second-placed Babar Azam from 23 to 47 points. Virat Kohli's unbeaten 100 against Pakistan has helped him overtake Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand to fifth position while KL Rahul has moved up two places to 15th position after notching an unbeaten 41 against Bangladesh.

How Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav Has Becomes India's Go-To Death Overs Bowler In Champions Trophy 2025

Kuldeep Yadav's art of left-arm wrist spin is subtle. It's not endearingly garish as it was in the world of Shane Warne or Abdul Qadir. His magic is well-concealed by layers of plainness and courage. A rewind to India's Champions Trophy match against Pakistan last Sunday will validate that impression. Pakistan still had some life in their innings at 200 for five with eight overs to spare, and an in-form Salman Agha was at the crease with Khushdil Shah. Skipper Rohit Sharma pressed Kuldeep into service. Immediately, Agha saw a scoring opportunity but his shimmy at Kuldeep's stock delivery ended in the hands of Ravindra Jadeja.

Champions Trophy: Australia, South Africa Promise Run Fest In Rawalpindi

Australia and South Africa, two teams possessing plenty of batting firepower, will look to outmuscle each other here on Tuesday and put one foot in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy. Not many were giving a depleted Australia a chance in the tournament but their record-breaking chase against England in Lahore has once again shown their penchant for rising to the occasion in ICC events. The dew played its part the other night in Lahore and could once again aid the chasing team in Rawalpindi.
