Records Tumble As Abhishek Sharma Slams Maiden T20I Century In 2nd Game vs Zimbabwe

Playing in just his second T20I for India, young opening batter Abhishek Sharma slammed his maiden century in the second match of a five-game series against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday. After completing his half-century in 33 balls, Abhishek took just 13 more deliveries to reach triple figures. He smashed seven fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 212, but got out on the very next ball after completing his century. Abhishek, who was dismissed for a duck on his debut, became the fastest Indian batter, in terms of innings, to score a century for India in T20I cricket.

The Indian cricket team in Zimbabwe got a huge boost ahead of the third T20I against the hosts as the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube joined the side. Notably, all these three players were part of India's T20 World Cup-winning team. While Jaiswal and Samson warmed the benches, Dube was part of India's playing XI. After a small break, the trio is back in national colours and most likely to get spots in the playing XI for the third game.

Shubman Gill, India's captain for the five-match T20I tour of Zimbabwe, has confirmed that he will be opening the batting with his Punjab state-mate Abhishek Sharma, while Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at number three in the series opener at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday. With the next edition of the T20 World Cup to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026, the T20Is against Zimbabwe mark the beginning of a new two-year journey for the current world champions in the shortest format. “Abhishek will open with me, and Ruturaj will play at number three. Rohit bhai and Virat bhai had opened in the World Cup, and I also open (the innings) in the T20s. So, I think I would like to open in the T20s,” said Gill in the pre-match press conference.

Shubman Gill-led Team India takes on Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the five-match series, starting June 6, Saturday. Khaleel Ahmed was another player, who got an entry into India's playing XI, after being rested in the second T20I.
