Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be appointed Indian cricket team captain for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka ahead of incumbent vice-captain Hardik Pandya, according to a report. Following India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, the trio of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from the format in international cricket. Shubman Gill was the captain in the T20I series against Zimbabwe but with Gautam Gambhir taking over the head coach ahead of the Sri Lanka series, Suryakumar is being considered to be the captaincy choice.
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is all set to lead India in the three-match T20 International series against Sri Lanka starting July 27. However, one of the heroes of India's T20 World Cup victory last month will take a break during the three-match ODI series, which is scheduled in August, due to "personal reasons". "Hardik Pandya was India's T20 vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. He is completely fit and available for the three-match T20I series and will lead the side," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
All the fans will cherish India's triumph at the T20 World Cup 2024 for a long time. However, India's victory also brought the news of skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja's retirement from the shortest format. The departure of these three stalwarts has put the management in jeopardy as the officials are facing a tough time while choosing a captain in place of Rohit. All-rounder Hardik Pandya had led India in the shortest format for a long time and was also the vice-captain in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Team India's tour of Zimbabwe concluded with a resounding 4-1 victory under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, but now, the focus shifts to the Sri Lanka assignment which gets underway on July 26. A number of top players, including the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, etc. weren't picked for the Zimbabwe assignment, with the Board deciding to give them a much-needed break after a victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. However, not all of them are likely to return for the Sri Lanka T20I series.
Veteran Indian spinner Amit Mishra touched upon some of the most controversial topics in Indian cricket during a chat on a podcast. While speaking of the KL Rahul-Sanjeev Goenka incident to the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir row, Mishra shed light on some highly talked-about topics in the sport. He also shared his views on Shubman Gill's elevation as India skipper, for the recently-concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe, saying he doesn't feel the opening batter should've been given the responsibility. For Mishra, Ruturaj Gaikwad remains a better option in all aspects, even as a batter.
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been impressive for the Indian cricket team as they comprehensively defeated Zimbabwe in the recently concluded T20I series. Both batters looked in tremendous form and with India facing Sri Lanka next in 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs, former chief selector Saba Karim urged the team management to pick both of them as opening options. Karim also asked team management led by new head coach Gautam Gambhir to also give a chance to Abhishek Sharma considering the fact that Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav are expected to bat No. 3 and No. 4.
Young India batter Shubman Gill enjoyed his stint as captain of the team during the recently-concluded five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Gill was the leading run getter as India came from behind to beat Zimbabwe 4-1 in the series. Speaking after the final game in Harare, Gill opened up on his first experience of leading India, and his learning from different captains he has played under. Gill made his all-format debuts under the leadership of Virat Kohli, who was then replaced as captain by Rohit Sharma in 2022.
