Captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday surpassed compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with a record seventh World Cup century to lead India to a crushing eight-wicket win over Afghanistan. Chasing 273 for victory in New Delhi, the hosts rode on Rohit's 131 to achieve their target in 35 overs for a second straight win in the 50-over showpiece event. He brought the nearly packed house to its feet with his century off 63 balls to go past Tendulkar's record of six tons in World Cups.
The Indian cricket team moved up to the second spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 standings following a commanding victory over Afghanistan in New Delhi on Sunday. India have four points from two matches with an impressive Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.500, Although they are level on points with the top-placed New Zealand, the Kiwis are just ahead on NRR (+1.958). Pakistan are third in the table with four points but an inferior NRR while South Africa are fourth with two points from one match. The loss was the second defeat for Afghanistan in the competition as they are at the bottom of the table with NRR of -1.907.
Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma added another humongous milestone to his already illustrious career with a scintillating century against Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday. The veteran batter looked in tremendous touch as he dominated the Afghanistan bowlers and was able to complete his ton in just 63 deliveries. It was the fastest century by an Indian batter in Cricket World Cup history and he broke the record belonging to legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev who slammed a 72-ball century against Zimbabwe in a 1983 World game that is etched in history books.
Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique clubbed centuries as Pakistan chased down the highest target in World Cup history to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The diminutive Rizwan overcame leg cramps to score a 121-ball 131 not out while Shafique hit a 103-ball 113 as Pakistan overhauled their 345-run target in 48.2 overs. The victory gives Pakistan two wins in as many games and a huge boost in confidence ahead of their high-profile clash against India in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Pakistan head coach Grant Bradburn insists his team's top-order batting is not a worry but that confidence may not spare Fakhar Zaman, the only man to have scored an ODI double hundred for his country.
India were off to a horrible start to the run chase against Australia in their opening match of Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday with skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer all losing their wickets without scoring a single run. This was the second instance in Cricket World Cup history that both of India's openers were dismissed for a duck in the same match. Before Kishan and Rohit, the dubious feat was achieved by Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Sunil Gavaskar who were dismissed without disturbing the scorers against Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. That match is incidentally etched in history books thanks to a stupendous 175-run knock by Kapil Dev that left the cricketing world stunned. Having once played in the same South Africa team as Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis, Roelof van der Merwe has finally made it to a World Cup - with the Netherlands. The 38-year-old is a member of a select group of just 16 men to have turned out for two countries. Van der Merwe appeared in 13 ODIs for South Africa between 2009 and 2010 before switching allegiance to the Dutch in 2019.
