Ranji Trophy tournament. Sources in the UT Cricket Association have confirmed to TOI, that the teenage sensation’s selection was based on his performance in the World Cup. Raj was on fire in the final against the England colts, returning with a five-wicket haul and scoring 35 runs, to be adjudged the Man-of-the-match in Antigua on Saturday.
Despite little age-group cricket in India for the past two seasons due to Covid-19, the India under-19 team notched up a nine-game unbeaten run, clinching two back-to-back tournaments. "It was an outstanding achievement by the boys. Hats off to them for winning two major tournaments - the Under-19 Asia Cup (in UAE) and then the World Cup in span of a month. Considering that we had hardly two-three months' time to prepare, it's a great achievement," India Under-19 chief selector Sridharan Sharath told TOI on Sunday. The way this bunch conquered an outbreak of Covid-19-six players were infected at one point in the league stage, forcing India to barely find 11 fit players for the games against Ireland and Uganda - is an inspiring tale in itself. Sharath gave credit for keeping the boys motivated in this low phase to batting legend VVS Laxman, who was in the Caribbean in his capacity as the National Cricket Academy head, and the team's coaches - head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, both former India players.
Yash Dhull, who was on the brink of missing the biggest tournament of his promising career due to Covid-19, days after starring in India's U-19 World Cup opener. Having experienced the worst symptoms out of the five players who tested positive on the eve of India's second U-19 World Cup game against Ireland, the captain ended up missing the remaining leagues games. It would be normal for any teenager to feel shattered under the circumstances but here was Dhull, who resorted to shadow-batting in his seven-day isolation in Trinidad besides visualising himself on how he would play in the matches against Ireland and Uganda. The scheduling of the quarterfinal also helped, as he, along with others, was able to recover in the nick of time for the quarterfinal against Bangladesh where he made a crucial 20 not out in a low-scoring affair. The 19-year-old from the busy Janakpuri neighbourhood in West Delhi, followed that up with a match-winning hundred in the semifinals.
India's Yash Dhull has been chosen as the captain of ICC's 'Most Valuable Team' of the U-19 World Cup. Overall, eight nations are represented in the 12-strong line up with champions India leading the way with three players included. Pace is provided by the likes of Josh Boyden, Awais Ali and Ripon Mondol with all-rounders Tom Prest and Dunith Wellalage being the spin options alongside Vicky Ostwal.
India continued their dominance in U19 World Cups by winning a record-extending fifth title on Saturday night in Antigua. Throughout the tournament there have been several star performers for India in their unblemished run to the U19 World Cup crown but in the final one man stood out and put his hands up on the biggest stage for a budding cricketer. His name -- Raj Angad Bawa. The all-rounder made key contributions with both the bat and ball in the U19 World Cup final against England to win the man of the match award.
Dewald Brevis’ fine showing at the U19 Cricket World Cup has earned him the applause of Cricket South Africa, noting his performances as brilliant after breaking the record for most runs scored at the age group tournament.
Motherwell manager Graham Alexander feels he might have unleashed a suppressed desire for Bevis Mugabi to play up front after unleashing the centre-back on St Mirren’s defence on Tuesday night.
