The expansion of the 2024 T20 World Cup to 20 teams was a boost to the global game that had been a long time coming.
Match 39 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 will see New Zealand facing off against Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba on Monday (IST). New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have each played three matches in the tournament. New Zealand sits third on the points table, demonstrating a strong performance thus far. On the other hand, Papua New Guinea is positioned fifth in the Group C standings, indicating room for improvement as they head into this crucial match.
The spectre of corruption in cricket continues to challenge the game's administrators but one potential approach from a former Kenya international to a Uganda player in the ongoing T20 World Cup was dealt swiftly by the sleuths of ICC's anti-corruption unit. PTI has learned that the incident took place during the league stage matches in Guyana where a former Kenya pacer tried to contact a Ugandan team member multiple times from different numbers. Following ICC's strict anti-corruption protocol, the Ugandan player reported the approach to the ACU officials on site.
Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said that spinners could be seen in action during the death overs when India starts off its ICC T20 World Cup Super Eights campaign against Afghanistan in Barbados from June 20 onwards. India will be taking on Afghanistan in their first Super Eight clash on June 20 at Bridgetown. India ended their unbeaten run in the group stage with wins over Ireland, Pakistan and the USA in low-scoring games, with their last game against Canada on June 15 being washed out due to rain. Afghanistan is also undefeated till yet, with big wins against Uganda, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. They will be taking on West Indies in their final group-stage game on Tuesday.
New Zealand's Trent Boult has said he will not play in the 2026 T20 World Cup after the Black Caps' exit from the current edition in the West Indies and the United States was confirmed on Friday.
Veteran pacer Trent Boult has confirmed the ongoing T20 World Cup will be his final appearance for New Zealand in the marquee-tournament. Since his debut in 2011, Boult has been a key member of the BlackCaps' golden generation, participating in multiple finals across all three formats for New Zealand. Additionally, the left-arm pacer has featured in four editions of the T20 World Cup since 2014. "Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup. That's all I have to say," Boult said at the press conference after New Zealand's nine-wicket win over Uganda.
Trent Boult described New Zealand's elimination from the Super Eight stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup as “not the start we wanted” after the Kiwis wrapped up their penultimate match of the tournament with a resounding nine-wicket victory over Uganda. Boult led the charge with the ball, delivering a masterclass in fast bowling. His figures of 2-7 were instrumental in dismantling Uganda's batting lineup, as he claimed the crucial wickets of Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya. Uganda were bundled out for a mere 40 runs in 18.4 overs.
Afghanistan star spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup due to a recurrence of the finger injury that sidelined him from IPL 2024. The injury has prompted Afghanistan to call up Hazratullah Zazai, an explosive opening batter, as Mujeeb's replacement. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the change on Friday afternoon, just hours after Afghanistan's convincing victory over Papua New Guinea. The ICC's event technical committee approved Zazai's inclusion in the squad, marking a strategic shift in the team's composition.
