ARENBERG, France: Simon Clarke of Israel Premier Tech won stage five of the Tour de France on Wednesday in a photo finish after a 157km run from Lille to Arenberg featuring 20km of cobbled mining roads.
EF Education-Easypost rider Alberto Bettiol's support for rival Tadej Pogacar during Stage 5 of the Tour de France was «horrendous», according to Eurosport's Robbie McEwen. With two team members up the road during the stage's cobbled section and one of them — Neilson Powless — in with a chance of taking the yellow jersey at the end of the day's racing, Bettiol inexplicably decided to hit the front of the chasing group, upping the tempo and allowing GC contender and UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar to make up some of the lost ground. Ad/> The goings-on didn't stop after the stage either, with Bettiol's team boss Jonathan Vaughters tweeting that it would be an «interesting debrief» and Bettiol retweeting a still image of him doing his work for Pogacar.
Tadej Pogacar sent out an ominous warning to rivals after the UAE Team Emirates rider passed his first big test of this year's race on Stage 5 of the Tour de France on Wednesday.
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) extended his lead at the Tour de France with a ferocious attack on the final categorised climb to win Tuesday’s hilly stage, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) jokingly stating he was happy to see the Belgian also drop his own team. Van Aert, who finished second in the opening three stages of this year’s Tour de France, made his move with 10km to go, launching a big attack to escape from his rivals, as well as his Jumbo-Visma team. Ad/> Defending champion Pogacar also couldn’t go with the move, but neither could his main rival Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) as the pair crossed the line amongst the peloton, eight seconds behind Van Aert.
