N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli sealed India's place in the Davis Cup World Group I with a convincing straight set victory, which handed the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead against Togo in the play-off tie in New Delhi on Sunday. With a 2-0 lead in pocket, India needed to win just one of the three matches of the day and the pair of Balaji and Bollipalli did the job in the very first contest against M'lapa Tingou Akomolo and Hod'abalo Isak Padio. They won 6-2 6-1 in just 57 minutes at DLTA Complex. Togo replaced their best player Thomas Setodji with M'lapa Tingou Akomolo due to an arm injury and it hurt them as he could not hold serve even once in the contest.
Former skipper Anand Amritraj finds it "ridiculous" that top Indian players have not turned up to represent India at the Davis Cup, saying that money or any other reason should not be a factor when it comes to playing for the country. India are taking on Togo from Saturday but best-ranked singles player Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri, who is now the country's best doubles player, did not make themselves available for the World Group I play-off.
Sasikumar Mukund returned to Davis Cup action with a fluent straight-sets victory over lower-ranked Liova Ayite Ajavon, putting India ahead 1-0 in the World Group I play-off tie against Togo, here Saturday. The opening match of the tie went on expected lines with Ajavon, languishing outside the top-1000, lacking ammunition to test the 365th ranked Indian in his home conditions. The 28-year-old needed just one hour and 15 minutes to walk away with a 6-2 6-1 win in the opening singles at the DLTA Complex. Ramkumar Ramanathan will take on Togo number one Thomas Setodji in the second singles.
Backed by strong preparations over the previous week, including acclimatization, singles and doubles-specific training, and team cohesion building, Team India is confident of delivering a robust performance in their Davis Cup 2025 World Group I Playoffs tie against Togo at the DLTA Complex, New Delhi, on February 1 and 2. Led by captain Rohit Rajpal, a former Davis Cupper and a member of the Indian tennis team at the 1990 Asian Games, Team India consists of five members: the experienced N Sriram Balaji, Ramkumar Ramanathan, and Mukund Sasikumar, and debutants Rithvik Bollipalli and Karan Singh.
India will be without their highest-ranked singles and doubles players, Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri, respectively, for the Davis Cup 2025 World Group I play-off tie against Togo scheduled on February 1-2. The duo have made themselves unavailable because of some dispute with the administrators. Team India captain Rohit Rajpal admitted the duo has grievances with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and hoped they will return to action soon. “Yuki and Sumit both have played for the country. They have some grievances with, I think, a couple of people in AITA, which need to be sorted. We are working towards it. But I still believe that you know, from my captain, Vijay Amritraj, our values that we passed on to the generations and that were passed on to me is that, you know, your nation comes first.
After spending 10 straight months in the top-100 in the ATP singles rankings, India's Sumit Nagal on Monday dropped out of the much-desired bracket following a string of poor show while veteran Rohan Bopanna lost his place in top-20 due to an early exit from the Australian Open, where he was defending a lot of points. Nagal maintained his top-100 rank since March 2024 after first breaking into top-100 in February same year on the back of a good show at the first Major of the season.
