A week after Week 4 trimmed the list more than expected, college football's unbeatens held strong in Week 5. While projections entering the weekend suggested we would lose about seven of the 21 unblemished teams, we instead lost only five. Washington (to UCLA), NC State (to Clemson) and Kentucky (to Ole Miss) lost to fellow unbeatens, and while Florida State and Minnesota both fell victim to upsets, those defeats were offset by upset victories for TCU and Oklahoma State.
For a while, it looked like we might have some good ol' fashioned chaos with Saturday's college football results, but eventually things settled down and there wasn't a whole of movement at the top of the class.
Alabama reclaimed No. 1 from Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll in one of the closest votes in recent years, and six teams — including Kansas — made their season debuts on Sunday.

SP+ had a pretty good lay of the land in Week 5, going 56% against the spread and missing games by an average of only 12.1 points per game. Those are strong numbers, but we still saw plenty of unexpected results. Georgia struggled far more against Missouri than projected (same with Penn State vs. Northwestern), Oklahoma laid an egg against TCU, Minnesota fell to Purdue after posting four weeks of absolute dominance, and Utah destroyed Oregon State, among others games.
College football's first weekend in October has come and went, and the year of the «basketball school» continues on.
