India registered a comprehensive win over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali, thanks to some all-round performances from players like Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant. While Jadeja was the star of the win with a classy 175 not out followed by a nine-wicket haul in the match as he dominated proceedings. Pant, on the other hand, put on an impressive show with the bat in the first innings when he played a counter-attacking 96-run knock. However, another crucial role in the match was yet to follow. After India posted a mammoth 574-8 declared, Pant supported the bowlers brilliantly with his "improved" outing behind the stumps.
Six years later, Ravindra Jadeja returned to the IS Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, slamming an unbeaten 175 and magical returns of 9/87 against Sri Lanka to hand India a handsome win by an innings and 222 runs, and bag his third successive man of the match award in four Test outings at the venue.
Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday went past Kapil Dev's tally of 434 wickets to become the second highest Indian wicket-taker of all-time in Test cricket. Ashwin achieved the feat by dismissing Charith Asalanka on the third day of India's opening Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. India registered a thumping win by an innings and 222 runs after bowling out Sri Lanka for 174 and 178 in the first and second innings, respectively, having themselves declared their first innings at 574/8. Ashwin finished the Test with another wicket to take his overall Test tally to 436 scalps.
Kapil Dev retired from international cricket in 1994. Once he had surpassed Richard Hadlee's tally of 431 Test wickets, it was the envy of the cricket world till Courtney Walsh went past him in 2001. Eight bowlers have gone past Kapil since and Anil Kumble has remained India's highest Test wicket-taker for close to two decades. On Sunday, R Ashwin claimed Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka first Test to go past Kapil's tally. After finishing the second innings with figures of 4/47, he now stands at 436 wickets in 85 Tests.
Allrounder backs up century with 9 wickets as India dismantle Lanka within three days in the first TestMOHALI: It was supposed to be a milestone Test match for three stalwarts in the Indian team - Virat Kohli played his 100th Test and crossed the 8000-run mark; Rohit Sharma led India in a Test for the first time and on Sunday R Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev's tally of 434 Test wickets. DAY 3: AS IT HAPPENED | SCORECARDYet, when India wrapped up the first Test against Sri Lanka, winning the match by an innings and 222 runs, the man who imposed himself on the game was Ravindra Jadeja. His match figures of 9/87 and his unbeaten 175 the previous day were the driving force behind India completing the rout in three days. When he cleaned up Lahiru Kumara in Lanka's first innings to complete a five-wicket haul on the third morning, he became the third Indian to score 150 runs and take five wickets in a Test match after Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar. That he is the first Indian to do so in nearly 60 years is further evidence of his calibre as an outstanding allrounder. Jadeja ensured there was no respite for a Sri Lankan team which can at best be described as ordinary.
Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a special milestone on Sunday as he overtook Kapil Dev's tally of 434 Test wickets in Mohali. The off-spinner took his 435th Test wicket on Day 3 of the first Test match against Sri Lanka, dismissing Charith Asalanka, to become India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. The BCCI took to Twitter to post a video of Ashwin celebrating his 435th Test wicket and captioned it as, "That moment when @ashwinravi99 picked the landmark 435th Test wicket". India went on to win the match by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against the visiting Lankans.
Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday said he had never thought of overtaking legendary Kapil Dev's Test wicket haul when he began his career and he is grateful of what the game has given him so far. Playing in his 85th match, the 35-year-old Ashwin went past the legendary Kapil's 434 Test scalps to become India's second most successful bowler in the longest format. He achieved the feat when he dismissed Charith Asalanka during Sri Lanka's second innings in the first Test. India won the Test by an innings and 222 runs. Kapil's 434 wickets had come from 131 matches. The legendary Anil Kumble tops the chart with 619 scalps which he claimed in 132 matches.
