England head coach Chris Silverwood has been appointed as the head coach of Sri Lanka's men's team for two years, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Saturday. The island country has been without a full-time head coach since South African Mickey Arthur stepped down late last year. "I am very excited to be on board with Sri Lanka and I cannot wait to get over to Colombo and get started," Silverwood said in an SLC statement.
Chris Silverwood has been named as Sri Lanka’s new head coach, two months after leaving England in the wake of their 4-0 Ashes defeat.
Former England captain Alec Stewart turned 59 today. The wicket-keeper batter was born on April, 1963 and made his England debut in the year 1989 in a one-day international against Sri Lanka in Delhi. He would go on to play his first Test match in 1990. Stewart was one of England's most dependable batters of the 1990s, and was also part of the team that reached the final of the 1992 World Cup.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) seem to have a problem of plenty with a selection dilemma on their hands in this season's Indian Premier League (IPL). The abundance of in-form overseas players is a good problem to have for skipper Mayank Agarwal, who has so far, marshalled his side with positive intent. The results are there to see, two wins out of the three matches played, bodes well for PBKS but the selection headache of picking four overseas players seems a bit tricky with the kind of options available. Kagiso Rabada is a world-class pacer and puts a strong case for himself to be selected while Sri Lanka's Bhanuka Rajapaksa has been in tremendous form with the bat and provides the much-needed impetus at the top of the order. Englishman Liam Livingstone and Odean Smith have already proved their worth and will be hard to ignore. And with Jonny Bairstow available for selection, Mayank could have a long day at work while sorting out the team combination.
Blaming the leaders for creating the economic crisis that Sri Lanka currently finds itself in, former cricketer Roshan Mahanama said that the country is running out of time. Mahanama, who was part of Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning team, said that the middle-class of the country has been slowly wiped out and people will continue to protest unless and until the leaders come up with a solution to address the dire situation. The former cricketer was also critical of the current regime and said that there is a need for a change.
Usman Khawaja said their Test series win over Pakistan last month shows how well balanced the side are and they will return to the subcontinent for a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in June and July confident of getting a result. Australia drew the first two Tests against Pakistan before winning the decisive third on their first tour to the country since 1998.
