In February, when Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped form the India Test team against Sri Lanka, there were lot of questions marks on whether it was the end of the road for the veteran batter. He had been going through a lean patch for quite some time. However, Pujara made an inspirational comeback to the Indian team after playing from great cricket for his County team Sussex and Ranji team Saurashtra. For Sussex, Pujara scored a double century in his first match and then went on to score another 200-plus score. He also scored two centuries.
The 34-year-old Pujara, who was left out of India's home Test series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, forced his way back into the national team for the fifth Test against England after scoring 720 runs in just 5 matches with an outstanding average of 120 for Sussex. While in the Ranji Trophy, Pujara scored an 83-ball 91 against Mumbai, he hit four centuries, including two double centuries for Sussex in Division Two County Championships. "It's about playing as many first-class games as possible and for me, that experience was very important. When you want to get back into form, when you want to find your rhythm, when you have that concentration, it is important to play some long innings" Pujara told BCCI TV.
Elegant left-hander Smriti Mandhana, explosive Shafali Verma, Sabbhineni Meghana and Yastika Bhatia are all top-order batters in India's 15-player squad. In the absence of Smriti, it was Shafali and Yastika, who opened the batting against New Zealand in February. "We do have many top order batters, including three to four of them, who can play as openers.
The Indian team is packed with a number of top-order batters and the new all-format captain Harmanpreet Kaur says all will get a chance to show their worth in the T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting Thursday. The 36-year-old played the last of his 46 Tests 11 months ago in the West Indies but has not been selected since over lack of fitness, missing a series in Bangladesh and another at home against Australia. Yasir started his career in 2014, becoming the quickest to 200 Test wickets after 33 matches four years later, while anchoring Pakistan's spin attack. He now has 235 wickets in 46 Tests.
Leg-spinner Yasir Shah returned to the side as Pakistan announced an 18-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Yasir had played a pivotal role in Pakistan's Test series triumph in Sri Lanka in 2015, having bagged 24 wickets. Uncapped all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who received his maiden call-up for the tour of South Africa last year, has also been recalled to the side. Mohammad Nawaz, who had withdrawn from the recent Test series against Australia due to injury, has also been recalled for the two Tests in Sri Lanka next month.
Dinesh Karthik jumped a massive 108 spots to 87th on the latest ICC T20 rankings for batters, even as young opener Ishan Kishan broke into the top 10. Kishan finished the series with two half centuries against South Africa and was the leading run scorer with 206 runs at an average of 41. That form catapulted the left-hander up one spot to sixth on the latest T20 rankings for batters.
