Commonwealth Games: India Beat Australia In Final League Match Of Badminton Mixed Team Event
Already through to the quarterfinals, defending champions India continued their rampaging run as they beat Australia in their final group A match of mixed team competition at the Commonwealth Games. The Indians have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead over the Australians on Saturday. After blanking Pakistan 5-0 on the first day, India yet again were by far the better team on display on the second day as they outclassed Sri Lanka 5-0 first and then beat Australia to top the group on way to the quarterfinals.

Day 2 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games saw India's opening its medal tally with weightlifter Sanket Sargar clinching a silver medal in the 55kg weight category. Soon after, Gururaja Poojary won a bronze medal in the 61kg weight category and then Mirabai Chanu really made the day shine with her gold in the women's 49kg category. In badminton, India ended up winning the mixed team event matches after defeating Sri Lanka 5-0 and then Australia x-x while pugilist Mohammed Hussamuddin defeated South Africa's Amzolele Dyeyi in the men's featherweight category to move into the pre-quarterfinals, and Lovlina Borgohain also progressed to the quarters in her xx category.

Commonwealth Games (CWG) a sparkling one for India and the country's weightlifting contingent. Olympic silver medallist Mirabai was expected to win a gold medal on the second day of the competition, and she did it with remarkable ease, shattering four records in a power-packed performance. Literally owning the stage, Mirabai outshone the field by lifting 201kg (88kg+113kg), which was a humongous 29kg more than the second-placed Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa's 172kg (76kg+96kg) from Mauritius, while Canada's Hannah Kaminski was behind by another kilogram (74kg+97kg). HIGHLIGHTS - DAY 2While others began in the 60kg range, Mirabai straightaway lifted 86kg in her first attempt to pull away from the field, and matched her personal best of 88kg in the second attempt. She went for a record-breaking 90kg, but could not succeed. In clean and jerk, she began by lifting 109kg and that successful attempt sealed her and India's first gold. She returned for a successful 113kg lift, but could not complete the 115kg in her final try.
