The T20 World Cup 2022 got under way in Melbourne on Saturday with the captains of all competing teams fielding questions from the media on the eve of the opening round.
Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus expressed concern Saturday about the cold weather in Australia, but insisted the African nation could set the Twenty20 World Cup on fire by upsetting Sri Lanka in the tournament opener. Temperatures at Geelong, where the global showpiece starts on Sunday, have been hovering around 16 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit) and plunging to as low as four in the evening. That is nippy for a Namibian side more used to balmy weather at home this time of year, and Erasmus admitted it was a shock to the system.
The blazing knock came close on the heels of the batter expressing his disappointment at not being picked in India's ODI squad for the recent South Africa series at home. In the Group A match, Mumbai put up an imposing 230 for three after being asked to bat first. Shaw did the bulk of the scoring, striking 13 fours and as many as nine sixes at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
The T20 World Cup is just around the corner and the qualifiers will begin from Sunday with Sri Lanka taking on Namibia. However, the Super 4 stage will start on October 22 with hosts Australia squaring off against New Zealand. However, the one match that everyone has their eyes on is between India and Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Team India reached Australia and they played two practice games against Western Australia XI. The side will also square off against Australia and New Zealand in official warm-up games before taking on Pakistan.
The T20 World Cup will get underway on Sunday with Sri Lanka squaring off against Namibia in the qualifiers. Ahead of the tournament opener, all captains of 16 participating teams were captured in the frame as they attended the 'Captain's Day' where they spoke to the media about the marquee event and the preparation of their respective teams. The official handle of ICC shared the picture of all captains in one frame.
India face Sri Lanka in the Women's Asia Cup final at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. Both teams had met during the round robin phase, and India won the game by 41 runs. India won five of their six games to take the top spot, while Sri Lanka finished third with 8 points. A ruthless Indian team would look to reassert its supremacy and aim to win an unprecedented seventh Asia Cup title. The track at the Sylhet stadium has been on the slower side where stroke-making is extremely difficult. In the round robin encounter between the two teams, India batted first and scored 150 and bowled out Sri Lanka for 109.
Despite the experimentation, the Indian team cruised to the summit clash without being challenged much, though it lost to Pakistan in the league stage. India will clash with on Sri Lanka in the final on Saturday for an unprecedented seventh trophy. "This (Asia Cup) is such a platform where you can test your limitations, what type of cricket you want to play and that's what we done in this tournament, always testing ourselves, putting us into pressure," Harmanpreet said on the eve of the title-clash. "We tried a lot of combinations because we have to do those things as the World Cup is around the corner." Harmanpreet said their focus after stepping on to Bangladesh soil was to unearth future match-winners. "When we came to Bangladesh we discussed that every game we have to look for different match winners, we didn't want to depend on one or two players. We wanted everyone to step up and win the game for the team and I am really happy that we are getting different match winners," she said. "The most important thing is to stay positive and keep thinking what you can do better for the team. I don't feel we need to think about too many things, just stay positive."
