RIYADH: The Riyadh 2023 World Combat Games kick off in 90 days.
Traditional rivals India and Pakistan will face off in the final of the Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Colombo on Sunday.
SINGAPORE: Singapore has assembled its youngest team ever for the Netball World Cup in South Africa next week.
Former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is a front-runner to become the national team's chief selector after the conclusion of the team's ongoing Sri Lanka tour. According to a report, Hafeez is favoured by the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board's Cricket Management Committee (CMC) Zaka Ashraf, to be appointed as the chief selector — a post that is lying vacant after the pervious CMC was dissolved in June.
At first look, the similarity is uncanny. When Duvin Malinga started bowling in the Mumbai Indians New York nets on the sidelines of the Major League Cricket, it was clear that he shared more than just the surname with his illustrious father, Lasith, who wowed the world with a slinging action. One which made him one of the most lethal fast bowlers to come out of his country. His son Duvin has now shown a similar action. In a video posted by Mumbai Indians on their Instagram account, Malinga can be seen overseeing his son's progress. He had a suggestion too. "Natural action. He needs to bowl straight and fast. If he beats that, he can learn the skills," Malinga said.
The Asia Cup 2023 schedule was announced on Wednesday. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head Jay Shah, who is also the BCCI secretary, was the first to announce the schedule. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), co-hosts of the continental event, also organised an unveiling ceremony to announce the schedule with its head Zaka Ashraf present on the occasion along with former Pakistan players. There, Ashraf inadvertently committed a comical blunder. When talking about the potential of Pakistan in ODIs, he mistakenly called fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, a top 10 batter.
Star India batter Virat Kohli on Friday surpassed South Africa's Jacques Kallis to become the fifth-highest run-scorer in international cricket history. Kohli achieved this upward movement in the batting charts during India's second Test against West Indies at Port of Spain. On the first day of the match, which is also his 500th international game, Virat ended unbeaten on 87 in 161 balls. His knocks included eight boundaries. The second day of the match could see Virat smashing his 76th international century and delivering the 'Kohli Special' fans have been waiting for.
There have been recent reminders that cricket and politics are never far apart. This was most obviously apparent from the ongoing farrago between the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
