The Narendra Modi Stadium -- nearly a third bigger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground -- will be host to five matches, including the final on November 19. He was a part of the Asia Cup 2023 squad as a back-up but he did not play any matches and had to return before the final against Sri Lanka. The 28-year-old stayed in the top two before stepping up in the final moments to pip Japan's Ririka Hironaka for the top position with a timing of 15:14.75. Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath fetched a silver in the men's 800m with a timing 1:48.43. For Parul, it was a second medal at the continental championships after she had claimed a silver in the women's 3000m Steeplechase on Monday. Earlier, Vithya Ramraj, 25, came up with a timing of 55.68s to claim a bronze medal in women's 400m hurdles.
Australia edged out Pakistan by 14 runs in a high-scoring World Cup warm-up on Tuesday as India travelled 3,400km from one corner of the country to another only to be defeated by torrential rain. In Hyderabad, Australia made 351-7 from their 50 overs with Glenn Maxwell particularly ruthless on Pakistan's bowlers. Maxwell cracked 77 off 71 balls with four boundaries and six sixes. Cameron Green was undefeated on 50, David Warner clubbed three sixes in his 48 while Josh Inglis also made 48. Marnus Labuschagne, a late call-up by the five-time World Cup winners, contributed 40.
Out-of-favour South Africa batter Faf du Plessis picked four bowlers to look for during the Cricket World Cup 2023. Surprisingly, India's ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah failed to make a cut on the list despite the South African star naming two Indian bowlers in it. While du Plessis left out Bumrah, he picked Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav among the four bowlers. South Africa's ace pacer Kagiso Rabada and New Zealand's pace spearhead Trent Boult completed the list. Du Plessis added that the performance of all the four bowlers will depend on the kind of surfaces they play on.
The ICC on Tuesday named legendary Sachin Tendulkar as the 'Global Ambassador' for the men's Cricket World Cup 2023 beginning Thursday in Ahmedabad. Tendulkar, who has an enviable record of featuring in six 50 over World Cups in his decorated career, will walk out with the World Cup trophy before the opening match between England and New Zealand, declaring the tournament open. "From being a ball boy in 1987 to representing the country in six editions, World Cups have always held a special place in my heart. Winning the World Cup in 2011 is the proudest moment of my cricketing journey," Tendulkar was quoted as saying in a press release.
