BENGALURU : New Zealand will relish a semi-final clash with India after they thumped 1996 champions Sri Lanka by five wickets to put one foot in the knockout stage of the World Cup, seamer Trent Boult said on Thursday.
New Zealand batsman Rachin Ravindra admitted it felt "surreal" to hear his name being chanted by Indian fans during Thursday's World Cup win over Sri Lanka. However, the 23-year-old shouldn't be too surprised as the southern city was once home to his parents before they moved to New Zealand. Ravindra, one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, gave fans plenty to shout about as he made 42 in his team's five-wicket win which has almost guaranteed New Zealand a place in the semi-finals.
Head coach Chris Silverwood on Thursday pinned Sri Lanka's horror run in the World Cup to its inconsistencies, particularly in batting, after the Islanders bowed out of the quadrennial mega event with a five-wicket defeat against New Zealand here. In a lopsided contest, Sri Lanka succumbed to their seventh loss in nine league stage matches and slipped to the ninth spot in the points table. The top eight teams will get direct qualification for the Champions Trophy in 2025. Sri Lanka were shot out for a mere 171 by the Kiwis, who won by five wickets and more than 26 overs to spare.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) on Thursday claimed that the ITF's Davis Cup Committee had ruled that India has to play its tie in Pakistan as per the original schedule. The PTF claimed that the ITF had ruled in favour of Pakistan after India had said they had security concerns over sending their team to the country. "The ITF has said that Pakistan will retain its hosting rights and has rejected the security concerns raised by India," a senior PTF official said.
What Glenn Maxwell did against Afghanistan in Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Tuesday will definitely be remembered for a long time. The Australian all-rounder scored a stunning 201 not out to help the five-time champions snatch a sensational three-wicket win from the jaws of defeat against Afghanistan in Mumbai. The win also sealed a semi-final berth for Australia. At 91 for 7, chasing 292, Australia were all set to join title-holders England, 1996 champions Pakistan and 1992 winners Sri Lanka as yet another notable Afghanistan scalp at this World Cup but Maxwell turned the tables.
BENGALURU :New Zealand returned to winning ways at the World Cup following a four-match slump as they defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday and all but secured their place in the semi-finals.
In another twist, the Sri Lankan parliament on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution, calling for the sacking of the country's cricket governing body, with both the ruling and opposition parties supporting it. The main opposition party leader Sajith Premadasa moved the resolution titled 'the removal of the corrupt SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) management' which was seconded by the senior government minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The parliament's approval came two days after the Court of Appeal restored the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva on Tuesday. On Monday, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked the SLC management and appointed former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga as head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the cricket board.
