The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday released the updated Women's ODI team rankings. Australia continue to lead the table, but England and India have made gains and closed the gap at the top. According to the ICC website, Australia's lead has narrowed to 40 points from 44 after the annual update. They now have 167 rating points, while England are second with 127 points. India, in third place, gained eight rating points and now sit at 121 -- reducing their gap with England from 11 points to just six.
R Sridhar, the former India men's team fielding coach, said he was left shell-shocked over Virat Kohli suddenly announcing his retirement from Test cricket. Sridhar added that he was fortunate to have been in the national set-up when Kohli was India's Test captain from 2015 to 2021, and eventually became the country's most successful captain in the longer format. In an Instagram post on Monday, Kohli announced that he will be retiring from Tests with immediate effect, ending a 14-year career worth 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85, including hitting 30 hundreds and 31 fifties with a highest score of 254 not out.
SYDNEY :Australia's opening partnership has been the subject of much debate since David Warner retired and remains unresolved less than a month before the World Test Championship final against South Africa.
If there was one player who was considered worthy of bettering Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 international hundreds, it was Virat Kohli. When Tendulkar was asked in an award ceremony after hitting his 100th century on who could break his record, he took two names: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Within a week, both Rohit and Virat retired from the Test format. Kohli, who quit the Test arena on Monday, is still 18 hundreds away from equalling the incredible milestone and now has just one format to play, maybe for a maximum of two years. In an age when the relevance of the 50-over format is a continuous debate, hitting 19 hundreds in ODIs is a humongous task. There is a possibility of Kohli featuring in the ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027.
Pace bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood and allrounder Cameron Green have been recalled from injury and young batter Sam Konstas has been retained in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship final against South Africa next month. Australia is the defending WTC champion and finished the league stage with an away win over Sri Lanka after a home series victory against India. “Those series capped a consistent performance across the two-year cycle and now presents us with the incredibly exciting opportunity to defend the World Test Championship,” Australia’s chief selector George Bailey said in a statement Tuesday.
Australia, named their squad to face South Africa in the WTC finals next month at Lord's, as per a release from Cricket Australia. Cameron Green's return to the Test squad after back surgery has been confirmed, with spinner Matt Kuhnemann also included, as Australia revealed their squad for their WTC defence and subsequent Caribbean tour on Tuesday. Sheffield Shield player of the final, Brendan Doggett, has been named a travelling reserve for the 15-player squad, which otherwise features no major surprises from outside the group that beat Sri Lanka 2-0 and India 3-1 last summer.
Australia named all-rounder Cameron Green in their 15-man squad on Tuesday for the World Test Championship (WTC) final where they will face South Africa at Lord's from June 11-15.
