Unarguably one of the most talented batters in the India spectrum, Sanju Samson's international career has been an intriguing one, with repeated snubs from the white-ball teams derailing his journey. Despite scoring a century in his last one-day international match, Samson wasn't deemed good enough for a spot in India's ODI series against Sri Lanka. Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa, when asked about Samson's case, had quite a blunt response, saying it's neither the first time, nor the last time that such a case happened with the wicket-keeper batter.
New India head coach Gautam Gambhir took charge of his first practice session on Wednesday, ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The Indian team arrived in Colombo on Monday, before the Suryakumar Yadav-led side, before making a short trip to Pallekele in the Central Province. India and Sri Lanka will play three T20Is in the city, followed by as many ODIs in Colombo. Following the retirement of captain Rohit Sharma from the T20I format, Suryakumar has been elevated for the leadership role for the three-match series.
Hardik Pandya has been going through a tough time in the past one year since the time he was made the captain of IPL side Mumbai Indians. After he replaced Rohit Sharma as the skipper of Mumbai Indians, Pandya was booed at most stadiums where the side played at the IPL 2024. After the T20 World Cup 2022, he was deemed to take over as the T20 captaincy but instead Rohit was made the skipper for the 2024 edition. Post the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he was the vice-captain, Pandya was expected to take over the captaincy again as Rohit announced retirement.
Rinku Singh has once again caught limelight for asking a bat from his fellow teammate. He earlier asked Virat Kohli for the latter's bat during India Premier League 2024. The request of the southpaw was later fulfilled. He has now asked Suryakumar Yadav for a bat. Putting a picture of his with Rinku, the T20I skipper of India put an Instagram story with the caption, "Theek hai bat le lena (Okay, take the bat). Resharing the story through his profile, Rinku wrote, "De do bhaiya bat (Give me the bat, brother)."
After months of specualtion, Gautam Gambhir's appointment as head coach of the Indian team was made official earlier this month by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm, is already in Sri Lanka with the Indian team for the upcoming white-ball tour. Gambhir was one of the two candidates interviewed for the role by BCCI's COC, following his successful stint as mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The likes of Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Mahela Jayawardene, and Stephen Fleming, were also reportedly in the race.
Hosts Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cruised into the semifinals of the women's Asia Cup T20 tournament with comfortable victories over Thailand and Malaysia in Dambulla on Wednesday. While Sri Lanka thrashed Thailand by 10 wickets in the final group match of the tournament, Bangladesh hammered Malaysia by 114 runs earlier in the day at the same venue. In the first match of the day, Bangladesh rode on opener Murshida Khatun's 59-ball 80 and skipper Nigar Sultana's 37-ball 62 to post a commanding 191 for 2.
Sri Lanka's interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya on Wednesday revealed that IPL side Rajasthan Royal's high performance director Zubin Bharucha has helped his batters prepare for the upcoming T20 series against India where he expects them to take advantage of the recent retirements by stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit, Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja retired from the T20 Internationals after India's World Cup triumph last month. The T20 series against Sri Lanka will get underway here on July 27.
