Despite scoring a century in his last one-day international match, Samson wasn't deemed good enough for a spot in India's ODI series against Sri Lanka. Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa, when asked about Samson's case, had quite a blunt response, saying it's neither the first time, nor the last time that such a case happened with the wicket-keeper batter.

New India head coach Gautam Gambhir took charge of his first practice session on Wednesday, ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The Indian team arrived in Colombo on Monday, before the Suryakumar Yadav-led side, before making a short trip to Pallekele in the Central Province. India and Sri Lanka will play three T20Is in the city, followed by as many ODIs in Colombo. Following the retirement of captain Rohit Sharma from the T20I format, Suryakumar has been elevated for the leadership role for the three-match series.

After months of specualtion, Gautam Gambhir's appointment as head coach of the Indian team was made official earlier this month by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm, is already in Sri Lanka with the Indian team for the upcoming white-ball tour. Gambhir was one of the two candidates interviewed for the role by BCCI's COC, following his successful stint as mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Rohit, Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja retired from the T20 Internationals after India's World Cup triumph last month. The T20 series against Sri Lanka will get underway here on July 27.
